Stick, twine and a pinch of the internet: we measure the Earth today with the method of Eratosthenes
Keywords:
Eratosthenes Experiment, Euclidean Geometry, Geographical Coordinates, Laboratory Teaching, Problem SolvingAbstract
The study is based on laboratory experience carried out in several classes of a professional institute in Milan and a middle school in Genoa that invites to replicate the procedure followed by Eratosthenes 2300 years ago to measure the terrestrial meridian. The course followed by the students is described, divided into several phases with outdoor activities, the situation is modelled through the plane Euclidean geometry, the mathematical problem is posed and the resolution analyzed. Finally, the didactic value of the experience is discussed and the use of the Internet is evaluated to determine the distance of the place where the equator is located and to exchange data between twin schools participating in the Eratosthenes Experiment event.
